NURSES HAVE BECOME BAT-CATCHERS

Bats are regular visitors to some units, especially during night shifts, said a nurse who works at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa. She spoke to the Citizen on the condition that her named not be used.
In one case, she found a bat clinging to a curtain around a patient’s bed. Nurses tried to remove it without waking up the patient.
The main concern public health officials would have with bats getting on to hospital floors is the possibility of someone being bitten, Fenton said. The incidence of rabies in bats is very low, he said, but it is still a risk. Bat dropping can also contain Histoplasma capsulatum, a fungus that can cause flu-like symptoms.
