It’s basically a case of taking a whole pile of money from one company and simply handing it over to a different company of the government’s choosing. The Ontario auditor general has warned that these sorts of green deals have resulted in ratepayers facing tens of billions of dollars in needless payments over and above the actual cost of the energy used. And Ontario manufacturers aren’t happy about it.
“The situation with electricity pricing is critical for businesses in this province and now with the introduction of cap and trade, we are going to see the same increases in natural gas,” says Jocelyn Bamford, spokesman for Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers of Ontario. “This will make running a business unsustainable in this province,” she warns.
