Our work plan agenda will be taking into consideration the need to travel across Canada in order to allow Canadians to share their opinions on Bill C-69. Canadians from coast to coast to coast deserve the opportunity to voice their concerns on the good, the bad and the possible unintended consequences of the government’s proposed legislation. Yet over the past weeks, we’ve witnessed a co-ordinated effort by a few of the prime minister’s “independent” senators to prevent the committee from conducting any public hearings across the country on this important government legislation.
Although the Trudeau government claims that Bill C-69 will make the Canadian energy and resources sector more competitive, the reality is much different. Many informed people consider Bill C-69 to be a reckless piece of legislation that will cripple resource development in Canada, and exacerbate the deteriorating employment situation in these industries.
Bill C-69 has been harshly criticized by the governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Enbridge has commented that C-69 will nearly double the approval timeline for pipelines. The Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Oil and Gas Industries Association says it will more than double the approval timeline for offshore exploration drilling. Saskatchewan-based Cameco says: “The proposed assessment processes are wholly impractical and illogical and, in our view, will never result in a major project approval.”
