MURPHY'S CHOICE: GREWAL FOR FINANCE MINISTER

Rex Murphy:   Mr. Grewal now appears to own three distinctions. He gets in debt more deeply than other MPs, out of it faster than he gets into it, and can hold a fundraiser to equal or surpass anything Bay Street’s moguls or Forest Hill plutocrats could put on for a party leader even with an attendant train of Canadian pop-star iconage to summon and soften big-cheque loyalists.
The Liberals should rethink Mr. Grewal’s exile. Beneath the tumult, one espies special talent. This man has the makings of a finance minister for the rough times ahead. He can handle a deficit with the finesse of a magician and has a fundraising ability that rivals the Kielburger brothers. Who better to stare down the recession many see in the making? The Liberals should take note of this MP’s immense personal growth, his facility with financial ricochets, and determine to make the best use of him for their collective advantage.
