PREMIER FORD'S CONSENSUS OF ONE

Ford’s main point Wednesday was that the terrific risk of reopening schools could set back his super-cautious plan to ever-so-slowly lift economic restrictions over the course of the summer. Not lift them entirely, of course. That would be madness.

One might have thought that the safety-first approach on schools would help speed up Ontario’s reopening. After all, an increase in school-related case numbers was included in the science advisory panel’s latest modelling. Eliminating any cases schools might have generated ought to improve the picture.

Ford offered little hope on that front, even though Ontario has vaccinated 69 per cent of adults, well beyond the 60 per cent threshold that was supposed to trigger a slight reopening June 14. The fine print on the 60 per cent vaccination number is that it has to be accompanied by unspecified reductions in cases and numbers of people in intensive care. Both those numbers have been coming down steadily, but when a target is not set, it can never be met.
