Brian Lilley: As the world is demanding more oil, the Trudeau government is getting ready to tell oil workers they should learn to code. In a move that makes it look like they can’t read the room, Trudeau’s Liberals are set to relaunch their “Just Transition” program to help oil and gas workers find new careers.
If the federal government is doing anything, they should be working to remove whatever barriers there are to getting as much Canadian oil and gas out of the ground as possible so it can be shipped to Europe. The world isn’t just looking for any kind of oil or natural gas, there isn’t a sudden spike in global demand, there is a desire not to use Russian oil.
In a joint news conference with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Monday, Trudeau was asked if Canada would increase production to help Europe. Instead, he talked about decarbonizing the economy and moving to renewable energy. That was in stark contrast to Johnson who said his government would work with companies with drilling rights to increase British production.
