CALGARY COUNCIL'S ADDICTION TO SPENDING

Maintaining a tax burden once shared among many more businesses by distributing it among the survivors of the decimation defies logic. It starts a vicious cycle in which more of the now overburdened businesses will also fold, deepening the pain. Throttling the golden goose has never been a sound plan for long-term economic success.
The reasonable and realistic response by city council to the economic crisis would be to adjust staffing and service levels accordingly, and slow down, delay or outright cancel non-essential spending to reflect the reality of its revenues.
The city’s addiction to spending prevents such a course, however. It has opted instead to preserve its own status quo by reaching even deeper into the depleted pockets of property owners and employers at a time when they are also squeezed for cash.
