AWAITING THE PLAN FOR ECONOMIC RECOVERY

Liberals are touting a “new plan for a different Canada.” I am all for making our great country even greater. But I doubt many Canadians want to see it fundamentally transformed — certainly not to a dystopian socialist state, hobbled by crushing debt, pervasive government intervention, burdensome red tape, an entrenched welfare trap and inflamed regional tensions. Yet Trudeau and his new minister of finance, Chrystia Freeland, have unambiguously signalled a leftward lurch, with an emphasis on green priorities and social spending. Economic growth, fiscal responsibility and natural resource development will be given short shrift.

The prime minister clearly intends to exploit a health tragedy to make the perverse case that a battered economy is the perfect opportunity to impose policies that will inevitably weaken it further. His approach partakes of a broader international initiative by progressives and crypto-Marxists to increase government intervention and multilateral meddling. It is a socialist and rent-seekers’ dream that goes even further than the totally impractical and radical U.S. Green New Deal.
