Around the world, journalists work in spite of censorship, economic issues, information control, national security and the threat of terrorism. All of this comes at a time when the news industry itself is in crisis. Traditional media – newspapers, television networks, radio – are desperately trying to unload legacy costs of printing presses, outdated and no longer necessary studios, editing facilities and staff in an effort to fend off competition from online start-ups, bloggers and ordinary folks with smartphones.
