WEASEL WORDS FROM ONTARIO MINISTRY OF ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS

CALEDONIA — Indigenous treaty rights are at the heart of a dispute over plans for a massive subdivision that will bring thousands of new residents to the outskirts of this small town.
But the Ontario Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs wants the developer and Six Nations to hash out the issues."In the spirit of reconciliation, Ontario encourages the Six Nations leadership and the developer to continue the dialogue regarding this project," a ministry spokesperson said Wednesday
In 1989, Six Nations band council filed a land claim for the property upon which the housing subdivision is planned.
Will history repeat itself?  In 2006, native protesters started occupying the Douglas Creek Estates, claiming the developer, Henco, was building on Six Nations land. Tensions between protesters, OPP and town residents ran high. The south Caledonia subdivision was never built.
