CAUGHT BY THE CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM

It was a carbon monoxide alarm in the basement of a north Pickering home that tipped off police to Canada’s largest carfentanil seizure, a court has heard.

And the Crown alleges the home’s owner — Maisum Ansari — gave police a false name in September 2017 when asked who had rented the basement apartment where the drugs and dozens of firearms were found.

Ansari’s judge-only trial began in Oshawa Court on Monday, where court heard that a record-setting 42 kilograms of the deadly narcotic were found inside the Liatris Dr. home, along with 33 vacuum-sealed firearms and drug paraphernalia.
