The Montreal protest began with demonstrators — mostly young people — dancing to music played through loudspeakers, chanting anti-Legault slogans and calling for “freedom for the young.”
However that festive tone eventually turned sour as some in the crowd detonated fireworks and then started to set fire to rubbish in Place Jacques Cartier.
The police riot squad was deployed and used tear gas to clear the square. Soon after that initial clash, dozens of protesters scattered through the city’s old quarter — a major tourist attraction before the pandemic — and began lighting fires in trash cans, smashing shop windows and demolishing city benches.
