IS FORD PROTECTING NEGLIGENT LTC HOMES ?

Families who lost loved ones in long-term care homes from COVID-19 “can’t believe” Premier Doug Ford is ramming through legislation that will make it much harder to seek accountability from negligent facilities, says a litigation lawyer.

Gary Will, whose firm is representing 2,000 residents and their families in nine lawsuits, said Monday Ford seemed to be “very sympathetic” when he went before the media in May to comment on a scathing Canadian military report on negligence at a number of long-term care (LTC) homes.

Retired Ontario court judge Marvin Zuker was so incensed with the proposed legislation, he wrote an article for The Lawyer’s Daily last week, entitled:Bill 218: The death of memory.

He said the proposed legislation may in fact deny those nearly 2,000 seniors in Ontario who died from to COVID “due process, rights and humanity.
