Agar: When in a free country the police are tasked by government to drag people from their homes for gathering in small groups on New Year’s Eve and to slap fines on kids on toboggans and skating surfaces, that country is edging past the limits of the power authorities should be allowed.
What will allow authority to overreach is that they will be initially supported by sanctimonious people who mistakenly believe they will never be the target of that authority.
Elected officials have encouraged the worst among us to police their neighbours. The type of poke-nosed, busybodies who were going about their neighbourhoods on a pre-pandemic day looking to call the bylaw department on the neighbours are now free to self-righteously call in the stormtroopers if it looks like Timmy and Susie are having too much fun on a snowy slope.
