An exhaustive report by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit last week cleared Toronto Police officers of criminal wrongdoing in the tragic death of 29-year-old Regis Korchinski-Paquet, who fell to her death from the 24th-floor balcony of her family’s apartment on May 27.
The next tragedy is that it won’t matter because when it comes to allegations of police racism and brutality, we now live in a post-fact world.
It doesn’t matter that the SIU’s painstakingly detailed reasons for its decision, and an extraordinary 25-minute video presentation by its director, Joseph Martino — all available on the SIU’s website — convincingly explains why no criminal charges were laid against the police officers involved.
