MAKING UNATTAINABLE PROMISES TO WIN AN ELECTION

John Ivison:  Marc Miller is one of the federal government’s smartest, most principled ministers. But a natural born politician he is not.

The Indigenous services minister was asked at a press conference on Wednesday whether he regrets the Liberal Party’s 2015 campaign commitment to end long-term drinking water advisories on reserves by the end of this month.

Miller’s face flushed and he mumbled something about “not being in a position to reflect.” More brazen colleagues would have tried to give solidity to a promise pulled out of thin air to win an election. Miller resisted the temptation to perjure himself but his body language screamed out that he thought it was the stupidest political commitment since Idi Amin promised to build the Ugandan space program.
