On March 26, two men wearing masks entered a bank in Mimico armed with knives. One stood as a lookout, the other demanded cash — while holding a knife and yelling. I can only imagine the terror those in the bank must have experienced.
Fortunately, two plainclothes officers were nearby and responded without hesitation. As a result, one officer was stabbed in the abdomen, the other suffered lacerations to his hands.
Make no mistake, these were violent individuals. They did not surrender. They attempted to flee and violently struggled. Our members did their job. Two suspects were arrested and no one else injured. Their actions are the embodiment of public service above self, and a stark reminder of the danger our members face daily.
The suspects were charged with a range of serious offences and put before our justice system. Within 24 hours, one accused was released on bail. A decision on bail for the other has yet to be made. Quite frankly, release from custody in these circumstances is unacceptable.
