CONCERNS OVER ALBERTA'S NEW POWER MARKET

With Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) expected to release its final comprehensive market design on Friday — essentially the system’s blueprint — before drafting the first set of capacity market rules in December, the consumers’ coalition wants the regulator to provide oversight before any key decisions are set in stone.
“Everyone is afraid, because it’s an administratively set market — they just set the dial wherever they want and people have to be on the hook to pay for it,” said electricity expert Duane Reid-Carlson, chief executive of consultancy EDC Associates
SMiranda Keating Erickson, AESO’s vice-president of markets, said the changes to the power system are not expected to lead to higher prices, she added.
  Wanna bet?
