LUCKI THREW THE FORCE UNDER THE BUS

The head of the RCMP is facing backlash from some rank-and-file members over her recent statements acknowledging the existence of systemic racism within the force.
In an internal email leaked to the Star, some members say they feel “betrayed” by Commissioner Brenda Lucki’s comments and worry that her statements have “opened us up to more danger, hate and criticism.”
Lucki came under scrutiny last month when, in a series of media interviews, she said she believed “unconscious bias” existed in the RCMP but that she struggled with the definition of systemic racism and its existence within the force.
Days later, after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters he believed systemic racism was a reality across police organizations, Lucki wrote in a June 12 statement that she should not have equivocated on the question.
