WHADAYA MEAN ROOFTOP LETTUCE AIN'T A MONEY MAKER!!

From Bruce Hutchison's Naional Post story
"...Naturally, they turned to the urban farming enthusiasts at Vancouver City Hall, led by Gregor Robertson, perennial contender for World’s Greenest Mayor. Alterrus obtained necessary permits and a cheap 10-year lease agreement, allowing it to operate a 6,000- square-foot hydroponic green leaf vegetable garden and packaging facility on top of a city-owned parking garage, for $2,400 per month.

And, you'll never guess what happened...
The lease was signed in April 2012, when Alterrus was already stumbling towards insolvency. Last week, it filed for bankruptcy protection...“working capital issues” along with “productivity challenges on the leafy green side of the crop production” had let the company down."

  1. Of course it was doomed to fail. The dummies should have taken a page from Ontario's thriving recycling industry - you know, get massive amounts of tax-dollars to pay salaries and cover costs, then you can "make" a profit.

  2. I think it was a wonderful initiative that would have worked if people could only be taught about the benefits of buying food that is grown like this, instead of the toxic GM hormone-laden stuff on supermarket shelves.

  3. Tell you what, msholistic. Take a bushel of your rooftop greens and stand outside Walmart in Edmonton and try hawking them to people who have to work for a living. Tell them that the stuff they're buying is toxic.

    2. Poor old msholistic. Nobody will listen to your sage advice. Must be just awful to stand there singing your save the world tunes and have everyone ignore you.
